Kualalalala Lumpur!

You just can't escape these towering beauties in this city

You just can't escape these towering beauties in this city

After the most epic journey of our lives (a mini bus, followed by a bigger bus, a boat, then a tuk tuk, a taxi, a mini bus and a cockroach infested sleeper coach), we arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 3am in the morning.  Not the best introduction to any city really.  This city was really going to have to be something special to impress us.

And impressed we certainly are.  Under British rule until 1957, it really does have that home from home feel about it.  After being in crazy, disjointed, manic  Thailand (in a good way!), it feels like a breath of fresh air to be in such an international, laid back place.

Travel around the city is incredibly easy, most places are within walking distance.  The cars stop at red lights (first time ever in our Asia experience) and people seem genuinely seem happy to take their time over whatever it is that they’re doing, be it an afternoon stroll or a lazy cup of coffee over looking the city.  Alcohol is expensive though, being a Muslim Country you are charged a premium for alcoholic beverages, quite a shock after coming here from super cheap Thailand.

The place to be in Kuala Lumpur seems to be in the Golden Triangle, the area surrounding the Petronas Towers.  Every day free tickets to the sky bridge connecting the Towers are given out on a first come first served basis.  We visited them today, not being a fan of heights, I was amazed when I found myself up there and didn’t panic, that was until the guide informed us, with some glee, that the bridge was not connected to either tower and sways as much as 10 inches in the wind.  The view was pretty incredible though.

To get that snapshot of a Kuala Lumpur skyline, it should really include a picture of the Petronas Towers and that is of course not possible if you are in them! The best birds eye view of the Petronas Towers comes from the revolving restaurant of the KL Tower.  We went there yesterday, it was pretty remarkable.  Olly did the age old trick of putting his bag on the floor next to him only to realise moments later that he was revolving and the piece of carpet next to him was not!  After a mini panic and small jog down the aisle, the bag was recovered, thank god!

Of all the places we have visited on the trip, I would say I could definitely live here.  Olly says he could too, as long as they reduce the price of beer.
